Yorkshire agency shortlisted for prestigious design award
Barnsley-based design agency DMSQD has been announced as a finalist at the Northern Design Awards 2013.
Nominated for best furniture design, The Phaeton Chair will face stiff opposition from designers at the annual event which aim to recognise and reward those who go the extra mile within the northern design scene.
In January 2013, DMSQD together with laser cutting and engraving specialist Cutting Technologies decided to host an exhibition to showcase the design possibilities available with the latest laser technology.
Cutting Technologies, also based in Barnsley, has some of the highest spec lasers in the UK and the marriage of creativity and technology means design can be pushed to the limit.
As co-organiser of the inaugural Enlightened 2013 event, DMSQD’s creative director Kyle Wilkinson, embarked on designing a Perspex chair.
Made from clear, 12mm Perspex and 77 individual pieces, the chair was well received at the Enlightened exhibition which was held at the Barnsley Digital Media Centre.
Wilkinson said: “The way technology is constantly transforming what is possible means the opportunities for designers are increasing all the time. Enlightened is a great way of giving some superb designers the chance to push their creative limits and we will be holding Enlightened II next June.
“It’s a huge honour to be finalists. The calibre of the designers shortlisted and their projects are exceptional so to be recognised amongst such a talented group is wonderful.”
The judges include Sir Terrence Conran and Red or Dead Founder Wayne Hemmingway.
Winners will be announced in a gala dinner and ceremony at The Monastery, Manchester, held on the November 22.
