Big six energy firms increase profit on supplying
Analysis from the energy regulator Ofgem shows the big energy suppliers saw profit margins in the supply of gas and electricity rise to 4.3% in 2012, up from 2.8% in 2011.
While power generation profit margins fell, the big six operators made £53 profit per household customer in 2012, compared to £30 in 2011.
The analysis of the firms’ financial statements does not take into account the most recent price rises announced earlier this month.
The findings raise questions around claims by the energy firms that price hikes were out of their control.
