North East payroll expert gets Government call up

A payroll services manager at a North East accountancy firm has been selected to share her valuable expertise by working with the Government on a national best practice document.

Angela Cammock, MSC FCIPP, who is based at Clive Owen & Co LLP in Darlington, has become an expert on the new payroll legislation, Real Time Information (RTI).

RTI is the biggest change to the Pay As You Earn (PAYE) system since 1944 and entails firms legally having to submit PAYE information to HMRC every time they pay employees, rather than once a year at payroll year end.

HMRC has said that many firms/payroll bureaus are not implementing the RTI legislation correctly and face penalties if they don’t comply.

Now Angela has been chosen by the Chartered Institute of Payroll Professionals (CIPP), of which she is a fellow, to work with HMRC in compiling a best practice document relating to RTI for all payroll bureaus nationally. The document will be available on HMRC’s website next year.

Angela said: “Many businesses and payroll bureaus are not operating as they should so the RTI document will be a valuable tool for those wanting to avoid any penalties.

“It’s a really exciting project to be working on and there’ll be great satisfaction knowing we can help scores of businesses understand the legislation.”

Chris Beaumont, partner at the firm, said: “It’s a significant achievement for Angela to be asked to contribute to this national document and highlights our standing within the payroll arena.

“The document will be an essential read for businesses as it’s highly likely the penalty easement will be stopped in 2014 and business owners will be left to pay the consequences if they don’t adhere correctly to the legislative changes.”

Clive Owen & Co will be hosting two events in January regarding recent changes within payroll in conjunction with NEST (the National Employment Savings Trust) to provide information on the introduction of auto enrolment and the action business owners need to take.
