Open Clasp Appoints Healthcare PR Agency Onyx Health to Launch Care Provider Training DVD

Open Clasp, the Newcastle based theatre company has appointed healthcare PR agency Onyx Health to work with them to raise national awareness of their training DVD Swags & Tails. The campaign devised by Onyx Health will tie into the Government’s Compassion in Practice agenda, targeting care home groups and home care providers to encourage them to look at how the DVD can be integrated into existing staff training packages.

The DVD stems from a ground breaking theatre production by Open Clasp taking a look at many of the challenges home care and care home workers face when undertaking their everyday duties and how these challenges may impact on the care given, especially when caring for those people living with dementia. By being much more aware and open-minded to these issues a person centred approach to care can be provided.

Open Clasp worked with 166 older women, carers and care staff to develop the Swags and & Tails theatre production and gained a huge amount of on-the-ground knowledge from this so developing a training DVD in consultation with care providers, service managers, trainers and academics has been a natural progression for the organisation.

“There has been a lot in the media recently about the lack of compassion showed by nurses,” explains Karen Winterhalter, Director of Onyx Health. “As a former learning disabilities nurse and a carer of a family member with dementia this DVD really struck a chord with me. In reality no nurse goes into the profession without a high degree of compassion but everyday work activities often mean we forget to focus on the individual person and their needs. This DVD is very relevant to the Government’s Compassion in Practice agenda which is being led by the Chief Nurse, with the President of the Royal College of Nurses endorsing the DVD as a very valuable training tool.”
