Power Station supports literacy in local first school

Lynemouth Power in South East Northumberland is using its Community Fund to help Pegswood First School make improvements to its library.

A donation of £300 from Lynemouth Power Limited has covered the cost of a bespoke story telling chair which has been designed and hand crafted in pine by New Horizons Timber Products in Morpeth.

The new chair is integral to the school’s library improvement project to overhaul the current space with brightly painted walls, pictures, colourful cushions and soft furnishings to create an inviting and cosy environment for pupils.

The project has been masterminded by nursery teacher Jenny Urquhart and classroom assistant Alison Franklin to encourage literacy and reading for pleasure amongst children aged 3 to 9 years-old.

Welcoming the donation, Pegswood First School nursery teacher Jenny Urquhart, said: “Storytelling is one of the best ways to help young children develop listening, speaking, and comprehension skills and to help them learn how to read and write.

“We devised the project to transform the school library into a relaxed and comfy space where children can look at books and listen to stories to encourage a love of reading for learning and pleasure.

“The new storytelling chair generously funded by Lynemouth Power is an integral part of our newly revamped library and will be used by staff and pupils to read and tell stories to develop reading and listening skills as part of the literacy curriculum.”

Deborah Walton, finance director at Lynemouth Power, said: “We are delighted to help our neighbours at Pegswood First School with its library refurbishment. Encouraging reading at an early age is important to build vocabulary, develop active listening skills and learn about words and letters. I hope the staff and pupils get lots of pleasure from the story telling chair for many years to come.”
