Spire patient completes gruelling ascent after full knee replacement
As Spire Liverpool Hospital celebrates its 70th year as a hospital on the Liverpool site some of the patients are celebrating their 70th Birthday in very exciting ways.
Roger Hayley celebrated his 70th Birthday this year with a trip to the Pyrenees in France to complete a gruelling ascent on his cycle of the Col du Tourmalet in Hautes-Pyrenees.
With Roger having recently had a full knee replacement at Spire Liverpool’s Bone and Joint Centre, this amount of endurance was an exceptional personal achievement.
This mountain has featured many times as the Haute Category climb in the famous Tour de France cycle race and is a steep gradient climb of 2115m to the top.
Orthopaedic surgeon John Davidson, who performed the knee replacement, said: “It is always great hear positive stories, especially ones of such personal success. At the Bone and Joint Centre it is always our priority to get patients back on their feet sooner and back to their normal activities, but this is truly an exception.”
Roger and his son Ross were so pleased with their achievement they have decided to return to the Tournmalet each year for the foreseeable future.
