Plans submitted to relocate Liverpool's 'Greatie' market

Plans to move Liverpool’s ‘Greatie’ market to Dryden Street have been submitted by the City Council.

The plans will see the market move a short distance from its current location to a new site on Dryden Street, following consultation with St. Modwen and market operators, Groupe Geraud.

An existing building will be refurbished to house the indoor market, along with a partially covered space for the outdoor market and parking areas for customers and traders.

The move is part of the Project Jennifer scheme to regenerate the Great Homer Street area, which promises to bring 1,000 new jobs.

Liverpool City Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Councillor Malcolm Kennedy, said: “We have listened to the views of the market traders and customers and this planning application responds to their needs and demonstrates our commitment to delivering this vital scheme.

“The new market at Dryden Street will complement the development at Great Homer Street and will provide a first class facility that will enable it to thrive.”

Paul Batho, projects director at St. Modwen, added: “We have been working closely with our partners for some time to determine the best way forward for Great Homer Street Market. Following lengthy discussions with the market traders and customers we are delighted that we have been able to reach an agreement on its new home.

“We are pleased that Project Jennifer is moving forwards into its implementation phase and we are looking forward to delivering the much needed scheme for north Liverpool.”
