Christmas demand the icing on the cake for Liverpool firm
The UK’s largest marzipan manufacturer, Renshaw’s of Liverpool, is now gearing up for the New Year – having met the Christmas cake rush.
The firm’s factory, off Parliament Street, makes 90% of the marzipan sold in the UK’s shops and supermarkets.
The plant also makes most of the ready-rolled icing sold in the UK, with its white icing much in demand for festive cakes.
With such focus on the festive season, the plant takes on dozens of temporary staff from October to December to meet demand.
Gauging demand can a tricky business in the final weeks before Christmas, as Renshaw’s managing director Robin Mountain explained.
He said: “We have to plan to cope with late orders.
“We had an order just last week for 10,000 cases of product as that chain’s sales were going so well. We’d laid off some temporary staff for the season and we brought a few of them back.
“Our Christmas season is a bit like fine-tuning a plane as you bring it in to land. It could be a bumpy landing or a smooth one. You never can tell.”
Renshaw’s are confident they will have met all their Festive production schedules to ensure their landing is as smooth as their icing.
