Chinese barcode tech firm make European HQ in Manchester

One of the world’s leading manufacturers of thermal transfer ribbons (TTR), Todaytec, has agreed a lease for its European operations office in Manchester Enterprise Zone.

The directors of the company, based in Hangzhou in Eastern China, were keen to open a UK and European base in the north of England. They chose Manchester Enterprise Zone after receiving support from the city’s inward investment agency, MIDAS, and UK Trade & Investment.

The new office is due to be operational later this month, employing four or five full time members of staff on site, with a view to growing UK business and increasing the workforce to twelve.

Jack Liu, Director of International Business for Todaytec, said, “Manchester is a great city, with excellent global connections. We have many clients in the UK and Europe, so it made sense for us to open our European operation here.”

Todaytec is in its eleventh year of trading, providing barcode ribbons. Operating from two factory locations, Todaytec exports to over 50 countries. The new European headquarters will focus on strategic business expansion and improved customer support.

Mr Liu added, “With so many high-growth, entrepreneurial and inspirational companies who fit into our target client list, we couldn’t think of a better location in which to base our customer service team.

“Manchester offers a low setup cost and possesses excellent infrastructure which includes a robust transport network, a strong business community and rich talent pool. Manchester Enterprise Zone is easy to access with very good quality facilities and a competitive price.”

Gary Chambers, Investment Adviser, UK Trade & Investment, said, “UK Trade & Investment are pleased to have supported Todaytec in establishing their new UK operation.

“Through our UK First proposition, Investment Services were able to provide Todaytec with the assistance they required to make the right investment decision for their business. Together with MIDAS, we will continue to support the growth of the company.”

Tim Newns, chief executive of MIDAS, said: “We’re delighted that Todaytec has chosen to locate in Manchester’s Enterprise Zone.

“This decision demonstrates that Greater Manchester is an ideal base for an international organisation to access the UK and European market. We will continue to work with Todaytec to help them build their operations here.

“MIDAS recognises that there is massive potential for inward investment opportunities from China and we are continuing to develop and grow our strategy in the region.”
