Emerging crowd-funded film director begins shooting in the North East

Filming has started in the North East for new picture The Cross, following a successful crowdfunding campaign.

Written and directed by 26 year-old Siobhan Schwartzberg, The Cross is the story of love affair between a nun and a monk, set in 1529.

Filming is currently taking place across Northumberland, Durham and North Yorkshire - taking in sites such as Brinkburn Priory near Morpeth; Bywell Church near Stocksfield; and Hadrian’s Wall.

Described as an “epic short film” The Cross was funded via a kickstarter page, which has attracted just over £7,000.

Newcastle-born Siobhan was named one of four ‘Future Film Makers’ in the UK by the British Film Industry in 2012.

Both Siobhan and producer Emily Munster say they turned down 9-5 jobs in order to pursue the project.

The team say roughly 20% of their budget will be spent on locations, with a further 8% on catering and 23% on equipment.
