Former RAF base gets off to flying start

An ambitious scheme by one of the country’s most prestigious house builders to create a new community at a former RAF base has got off to a flying start - after attracting interest from across the country.

Charles Church says its magnificent St Andrew’s Park development in Uxbridge has quickly earned a national reputation, with homes already selling off plan.

Of the first 23 homes initially released, 16 have already been reserved, including four stunning detached houses on the edge of the park on Vine Lane.

The four individually-designed four and five-bedroom executive properties, nestled in a wooded area and starting at £724,950, were the first properties to be offered for sale as part of the regeneration of the former RAF Uxbridge site.

Charles Church has now released its Crescent Collection for sale at the site and says it has already been inundated with interest.

Elaine Stratford, Charles Church sales and marketing director, said each of the three-bedroom properties released had already been reserved, with four bedroom properties in The Crescent Collection ranging from £634,950 to £649,950 for a four bedroom town house. Four bedroom detached houses are also released at £659,950.

“We have taken reservations from a broad mix of people – both local and those from farther afield – and have received interest from would-be buyers from a wide geographic area. For example, one family is moving down from the Midlands because they recognise just how unique the development is.

“These are homes of the highest quality in an unbeatable location, offering a haven of tranquillity whilst still keeping the heart of London within easy striking distance, and as such they have a tremendous appeal to buyers from all parts of the country.

“We have selected a range of four and five-bedroom homes which combine aesthetically pleasing designs with traditional building techniques and each house style is created to fully utilise the interior space and to combine modern and efficient convenience within contemporary and elegant exteriors.”

Charles Church Thames Valley managing director, Ian Menham said the success of the early sales was hugely encouraging.

“These are really superb homes in an exceptional location and the interest they have attracted has reflected that.”

St Andrew’s Park will eventually provide a new community of over 1,200 much-needed homes, as well as a primary school, GPs’ surgery, theatre, community buildings, a hotel, commercial space and a retirement home.

Ian said the regeneration of the old RAF Uxbridge site was expected to take up to seven years and would create a thriving new community set in 45 acres of picturesque parkland.

“We believe St Andrew’s Park will become a thriving neighbourhood meeting the needs of homeowners at all stages of the property market. These first sales are an important milestone on the seven-year journey we are now beginning.”

RAF Uxbridge has a rich history and is most recognised for the immense part it played in the Battle of Britain. It was here that No. 11 Group RAF were based, who were responsible for the aerial defence of London and the south-east of England.

A bunker, subsequently known as the Battle of Britain Bunker, was built nearby to house the 11 Group Operations Room, which controlled fighter squadrons operating within the group. The Operations Room was also responsible for providing air support during the evacuation of Dunkirk in May 1940 and the D-Day Landings. It was from the bunker that Sir Winston Churchill gave his wartime speech, “Never was so much owed by so many to so few”.

The bunker has been retained and transformed into a museum.
