Neurosupport and the Walton Centre team up to provide new services to aid brain injury recovery

Two of Merseyside’s leading providers of care and services for patients suffering from neurological conditions have joined forces to introduce a range of new services.

The Walton Centre, the country’s top neurological treatment centre, is working with specialist charity Neurosupport to provide comprehensive and long term support for patients before, during and after treatment.

Neurosupport is providing link workers to operate from of the Walton Centre to provide emotional support and practical advice for patients and families using the centre. The collaboration will allow Walton Centre staff to concentrate on providing excellent clinical care and enable patients and their families to ease the transition into the post-treatment recovery period.

The latest moves are part of a joined up effort to facilitate support for those with neurological injuries or conditions from the offset, and advice for their families and loved ones. Often, important practical and emotional support is seen as superfluous in light of urgent medical attention, but becomes increasingly relevant if patients are diagnosed with long term neurological conditions.

Lisa Grant, Director of Nursing at The Walton Centre says: “The Walton Centre is the only neurosciences centre in the country, as such we have a huge catchment area and we operate busy wards.

“Our nurses have a meticulous care checklist, but often support for the families of patients is secondary to the medical care we provide. However, it is important to us that the quality of care we provide extends beyond a patients stay with us.

“As such, we now have a discharge booklet signposting Neurosupport as a facilitator of support and advice. The link workers are very visible in The Walton Centre and together we seem to be eradicating the vulnerability that our patients often feel.”

In addition to the link workers, Neurosupport is also running its Back on Track programme within the Walton Centre. Back on Track is a specialist programme designed to engage people at an early stage and rehabilitate them slowly and effectively.

Gerry Tyrrell, services manager at Neurosupport, said, “We can ensure that people are practising the skills required to return to the workplace, and also work with employers to inform them on how to maintain roles for people with neurological conditions, integrating everything into one vocational plan.”

“With the addition of link workers and ‘Back on Track’, Neurosupport now uniquely offer a holistic service, from accident or diagnosis right the way through back into employment. It’s fantastic, and we’re the only charity in the country doing what we do.”

Neurosupport is funded through a range of activities from donations from the public to raising money through providing conference facilities at their head quarters on Norton Street. All income from room hire at Norton Street goes into underpinning the vital work the charity carry out to support people with neurological conditions, their families and carers.

Neurosupport are holding a preview event at their premises on Thursday 23rd January, 5.30-8.30pm. This will be an opportunity to experience this unique space first hand, meet the team and hear more about the charity.
