New partnership ‘set to destruct’

Centrex Services is today warning of an area of security that is believed to be safe, but constantly falls between the cracks. The company is advising the industry that erasure and shredding of magnetic media is not a guarantee of data disposal. Wiping or physically destroying the drive does not destroy the data.

The warning comes in as the 2014 update to the Data Protection Act is due to come into force. In a response to industry changes Centrex Services has partnered with Proton Data Security International in order to extend its services in secure data destruction. The five-year agreement will enable companies to benefit from on-site exchange of faulty HDDs and tape media with on-site destruction via degaussing, in accordance with ISO 27001 standards.

Proton Data Security International is a manufacturer of degaussers and data security products. With over 25 years of experience in the data security industry, its degaussers also use the only approved data-elimination method of the US National Security Agency and the Department of Defense and guaranteed compliance with the ISO 27001 standard for information security management systems; all other methods leave businesses at risk of data breaches.

Glyn Dodd, managing director of Centrex Services explains: “We support what is one of the most complex and demanding areas of the supply chain. Secure disposal of HDD’s is often an area that is overlooked, especially when many companies hand over hard drives to a third party to destroy them.

“Our partnership with Proton Data Security International enables companies to benefit from either the purchase of a unit that can reside on site, or a site visit for secure certified data destruction of all storage types; eradicating the need for the data to be handled by anyone else.”

Michael Wegwermer, EU Director, Proton Data Security International, says: “Simply deleting files, using software overwrites, or physically damaging hard drives is insufficient because it leaves data forensically recoverable. The only way to permanently erase sensitive data is to degauss it. Our partnership with Centrex Services provides the ultimate peace of mind; disposing of data doesn’t mean risking the data.”
