Aertv deploys digital element’s IP geolocation technology to manage TV and film licensing rights online
Industry-leading IP geolocation intelligence technology used to ensure compliance with geographic rights and improve viewing experience
Digital Element, the leading provider of IP geolocation intelligence technology, today announced that Aertv, Ireland’s first social TV platform, has deployed its NetAcuity® geolocation technology to manage the geographic rights of its internet-based TV and film content. In addition, Aertv will utilise Digital Element’s connection type data to optimise the viewer’s experience.
Aertv currently offers 34 channels including BBC One, BBC Two, BBC News, RTÉ One and RTÉ Two. The platform allows viewers to watch live TV shows on PCs, laptops or mobile devices while simultaneously using social media channels such as Facebook and Twitter. Due to content provider licensing rights, the company must restrict viewing of its TV and film content to Ireland. By using Digital Element’s real-time IP geolocation technology, which includes features that can detect use of 3G and 4G services, Aertv is able to restrict access to mobile device users who travel outside of Ireland where viewing is prohibited.
Aertv also uses Digital Element’s IP-derived connection type data to anonymously identify the connection speed of its customers. This enables the delivery of content streaming to suit connection speed, optimising the viewer’s experience.
“Aertv switched to a premium IP geolocation provider to absolutely ensure content is restricted to Ireland”, commented Philippe Brodeur, Director, Aertv. “We require the most accurate and up-to-date IP geolocation data, and Digital Element is the only provider to produce highly precise data that enables us to guarantee compliance with our licensing rights obligations. When it came to integrating with our complex, multi-platform systems, Digital Element’s flexibility set them apart from other providers while the company’s ongoing customer support has been second to none.’’
Founded in 1999, Digital Element is the industry pioneer of IP geolocation technology, and its NetAcuity Edge technology has revolutionised the IP geolocation space. By combining IP routing infrastructure analysis with anonymous location insight gleaned from a network of global commercial partners, NetAcuity Edge provides the most detailed, hyperlocal dataset available worldwide today that maintains user anonymity and complies with the highest standards of end-user privacy.
“We are pleased to be working with Aertv to enable compliance with licensing requirements, as well as enhance the viewing experience for its customers,” said Charlie Johnson, Digital Element’s Senior Media Director, Europe. “Using poor quality IP data can compromise geographical viewing restrictions, which is unacceptable and unnecessary. Utilising premium IP geolocation data enables clients to confidently meet licensing commitments.’’
Aertv joins some of Digital Element’s other high-profile clients including Virgin Media, Channel 5, YouView, CNN, ESPN, Sony, CBS Interactive, ABC and Tesco’s Blinkbox.
