Harmonised EU tax reforms - is the UK in it, or will we bin it?
They say a camel is a racehorse designed by committee, and it seems this might very well be the case at the Economic and Finance Ministers Council (ECOFIN) meeting in Brussels this week.
The meeting will seek to make progress on a number of EU-wide tax developments, including pushing forward the political debate on the Common Consolidated Corporate Tax Base (CCTB) and harmonising an EU-wide Standard VAT Return.
However, only last week in a House of Commons debate Minister for Europe David Lidington stated ‘There will indeed be measures in the REFIT package, as in other Commission proposals, with which we disagree. We have made it clear that we will continue to resist both the proposals to which my hon. Friend alludes.’
We suspect that the ECOFIN minutes could very well result in a short ‘carried forward’ action point.
