North Yorkshire based Shire Country Services launches new log enterprise

RURAL contracting firm Shire Country Services has launched a new log business to tap into surging demand from commercial and residential wood burner owners.

The Richmond-based business has established TheLogCompany.com to initially supply hardwood logs to customers across North Yorkshire, County Durham and Tees Valley.

However its creators believe the new firm has great potential to expand as the wood burning market continues to grow.

Shire Country Services, which is headed up by Mark Smith and Edward Gibbon, serves the grassland maintenance needs of equestrian and country properties and operates a range of compact tractors and machinery.

The winter season tends to be quieter for the firm as temperatures drop and grass stops growing.

And so TheLogCompany.com is designed to run alongside it, providing it with an extra revenue stream and meeting demand from new and existing customers.

Edward Gibbon said: “I am delighted to be able to diversify by adding TheLogCompany.com to our operations. It makes a lot of sense to be utilising existing machinery and overheads in the production and delivery to homes across the area.”

Mark Smith added: “Following numerous requests from clients, it became apparent to us that there was a demand for high quality dry hardwood logs. Combining a good product, a convenient website that allows customers to order online and a friendly efficient service, we’re hoping for great things.”

TheLogCompany.com has already built up a 500-strong customer base, which includes private homes, commercial properties and industrial units.

The business supplies only sustainably sourced products, including kiln-dried hardwood from Eastern European countries which have strict and sustainable forestry management practices in place. These practices ensure that the amount created by afforestation and regeneration is greater than the amount of felled.

Mark Smith commented: “Kiln dried logs are proving to be a big hit with many of our customers, particularly those with log burning stoves who are looking for the most efficient fuel at an affordable price – once they have used it they rarely want to change to anything else.”

Many of its customers are ‘off grid’ for gas and have stoves or open fires, while others are increasingly using the firm’s high quality dry hardwood to offset spiralling heating bills.

Having successfully grown sales since its launch, the company is now looking to create new jobs, broaden its product range and expand its supply area.
