Infrastructure works begin around former Swan Hunter yard
Work has started on upgrading the roads, electrical infrastructure and drainage around the former Swan Hunter site in Wallsend, which is being regenerated into a manufacturing hub.
The 34 acre site will provide Enterprise Zone benefits to subsea, offshore and renewable firms looking to locate there.
Work to improve the local highway network is currently being carried out on behalf of North Tyneside council by its technical services partner Capita.
Earlier this week work began on upgrading the site’s eastern access point, which will be the main route into Swans for light vehicles.
The scheme involves introducing signals at the A187 Hadrian Road/Buddle Street at the junction with Park Road and includes a no right turn onto Park Road.
It is due for completion in May and then work will start on bringing the road at Carville Way up to an improved standard.
In April, work is expected to start on the demolition and replacement of the existing bridge at Benton Way. It will enable Heavy Goods Vehicles to enter the west of the site.
An upgrade of the junction leading to Benton Way is already complete, including the removal of the roundabout and installation of traffic signals.
A scheme to upgrade a zebra crossing to a toucan crossing on Buddle Street for the benefit of pedestrians and cycle users is also finished.
Once the signals on the A187 are in place they will be linked with the other signals, improving the flow of traffic in the area.
