Football club proud to promote equality
A top North East football club is proudly giving its support to the fight for equality.
Barclays Premier League side Sunderland AFC has signed up to the international Football v Homophobia campaign, designed to make football more inclusive at both a professional and grassroots level.
The club, which also plans to fly a rainbow flag at the Stadium of Light to mark the International Day Against Homophobia in May, is supporting the campaign as part of a wider effort to tackle prejudice against the lesbian, gay bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community.
It also follows a recent announcement that SAFC’s catering subsidiary, 1879 Event Management, has signed a three year deal to provide catering facilities at North East LGBT festival, Newcastle Pride.
Gary Hutchinson, commercial director at Sunderland AFC and 1879 Events Management said: “Newcastle Pride is a fantastic festival and something that we are hugely proud to be associated with. Our involvement is not just about delivering a commercial service, it is about showing support for an event that celebrates and triumphs inclusivity, a core value that we embrace wholeheartedly.”
Newcastle Pride, now in its seventh year, is expected to attract more than 65,000 visitors in 2014, with a series of events being held at Newcastle’s Town Moor and Times Square on July 18, 19 and 20.
Mark Nichols, Chair of Northern Pride, which organises the event, said: “We have been working with SAFC and 1879 Events Management for the past two years. The support and understanding both organisations have shown for the fight against homophobia in that time has been amazing and we’re delighted to be continuing that relationship into 2014 and beyond.”
