North Easts top buildings up for "property Oscars"

Sixty-four of the region’s most impressive property schemes are set to battle it out to be crowned ‘Project of the Year’ title after being shortlisted for the RICS North East Renaissance Awards 2014, regarded as the region’s property ‘Oscars.’

RICS (Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors) received a record number of entries from across the North East, with an unprecedented variety of schemes, ranging from small-scale projects through to multi-million pound developments.

All the shortlisted developments (see end of release) and are now in with a chance of winning one of eight prestigious awards and the ‘Project of the Year’ title.

The categories are: Building Conservation, Commercial (property), Community Benefit, Design through Innovation, Regeneration, Residential (property), Tourism & Leisure and Infrastructure.

The title of Project of the Year is awarded to the entry judged to have scored the highest across all eight. In 2013, this went to Tyne Tunnel 2.

The second round of the judging process is currently taking place and the winners will be announced at a glittering black-tie ceremony held on 25 April 2014 at Newcastle Civic Centre, to be hosted by George Clarke, honorary RICS member and host of Channel 4’s Restoration Man.

Winners in four of the categories (Building Conservation, Community Benefit, Design & Innovation and Regeneration) will automatically be entered into the national RICS Awards, where they will compete against other leading projects from across the UK later this year.

Chair of the RICS North East Renaissance Awards 2014 judging panel, David Furniss, head of BNP Paribas’ Newcastle office, said: “I’m delighted to announce the shortlist for the RICS North East Renaissance Awards 2014. The awards showcase the very best in property and construction across the region. Competition this year has been stronger than ever. With 64 projects shortlisted, there is a lot for the North East to be proud of.

“From heritage restoration to the latest in cutting-edge architecture, and from community projects to commercial space, the North East’s talented property professionals are raising the bar on what can be achieved.

“I look forward to congratulating all the winners at the awards ceremony on 25 April and seeing which projects go through to compete for RICS Project of the Year 2014 at the RICS Awards Grand Final in London on 17 October 2014.”

The second round of the judging process is currently taking place and the winners will be announced at a glittering black-tie ceremony held at Friday April 25 2014 at Newcastle Civic Centre.
