Student Joe learns at Barratt Homes North East
STUDENT Joe Corrigan, from Middlesbrough, has joined Barratt Homes North East on a “year out in industry” placement.
Joe, 23, who is studying for a Civil Engineering degree at Liverpool John Moores University, is working in the technical department at the Newcastle-based housebuilder.
He said: “I’m really enjoying it so far. There is quite a lot of variety in the work, which will help me make my mind up about where I’d like to go in my career.
“I’m looking forward to getting out on site and seeing projects progress, including the Grey Towers Village development at Nunthorpe, where the company is building 295 homes under the David Wilson Homes
brand.
“The people I’m working with are very friendly and giving me lots to do. I feel that I’m contributing something to the company and getting paid as well!”
Joe, who lives in Linthorpe, attended Newlands School and St Mary’s College.
“I was always interested in science at school and when I was looking at degree courses I was attracted to engineering,” he said.
“I like the idea of being involved in building something that is going to be there for years to come. We need new housing and infrastructure, it’s vital to the economy of the country.”
Finance Director Scott Martin said: “We were pleased to offer Joe this placement. He’s a local lad, bringing technical skills learned at university back to the North East, and I’m sure he will be an asset to the company during his time here.
“Career development is very important to us and we regularly recruit apprentices and graduates. We benefit from the creativity and enthusiasm that young people bring and training has proved to be a sound investment for us over the years.”
Nationally, the Barratt Group intends to recruit around 600 graduates and apprentices over the next three years, to help tackle the skills shortage that could constrain future growth prospects of the industry.
