Gloucestershire assistant site manager among first to take new degree course

Gloucestershire’s assistant site manager Bethan Powell has become one of the first in the country to study a new bespoke foundation degree in Residential Development and Construction – designed by Barratt Homes with Sheffield Hallam University.

Barratt managing director Richard Gregory said: “This degree is a first for us and for the industry. Barratt site managers are a vital part of our workforce in underpinning the quality and sustainability of the homes we build. They face new challenges in terms of the increasingly technical build processes, so we’re investing in our people today for future growth. Our 25 new trainee assistant site managers in the country are already proving to be great assets to our divisions.”

Bethan, who works at the Barratt’s Dove Hill development in Gloucestershire said: “This role has given me the chance to be involved in many different aspects of the company and I’m really enjoying getting stuck in to the construction side of things. It’s a great feeling to be involved in the building processes of such a big company, and I’m hoping to work my way up through the ranks, as a result of the foundation degree.”

The Foundation Degree in Residential Development and Construction is a three-year part-time course designed specifically for Barratt Group employees.Students will attend Sheffield Hallam University in four, one-week blocks.

Learning will be a mix of classroom-based, laboratory-based and out on site.The course will be completed by December 2016 and students will then move onto a top-up course to obtain a BSc qualification in Residential Development and Construction.Students who go on to complete the top-up course will graduate in November 2018.
