National Apprenticeship Week - Get Oldham Working events

A series of events and activities during National Apprenticeship Week are taking place to tie-in with the Get Oldham Working scheme.

Job Centre Plus is providing a drop-in session to support 16 to 19-year-olds who are looking for apprenticeships.

It takes place on Wednesday, March 5 at The Centre, Medtia Place, on Union Street, In Oldham, from 10am until 12 noon.

On Thursday, March 6, the Centre and Positive Steps Oldham play host to an Apprenticeship and Traineeship Event – where a variety of local providers who deliver apprenticeships and traineeships will speak to young people about the programmes that they have to offer. It takes place from 1pm until 3pm.

The council and its partners are holding a Jobs and Volunteers Fair at the Robin Hill Youth Centre, in Coldhurst, on Wednesday, March 5.

The event, from 2pm to 5pm, will be a chance for those who need information about apprenticeships, jobs and work experience. Here visitors can learn about volunteering, get some interview tips and skills and receive some advice to help make your CV stand out.

On Friday March 7, AKSA Homes, supported by the Get Oldham Working team, will support International Women’s Day with employment support and advice at the E3 Business and Enterprise Hub, at Earl Business Centre, on Dowry Street, in Oldham. It runs from 10am until 2pm.

Councillor Amanda Chadderton, Cabinet Member for Education, Employment and Skills, said: “As a council we are large employer and to promote apprenticeships to other business, organisations and residents, we need to lead by example.

“We currently have 64 apprentices and trainees in the council and we are looking to recruit more.

“Since Get Oldham Working was launched in May of last year, we have been working hard and created 192 apprenticeships and traineeships with strong support from local business.”

Apprenticeships let you earn while you learn and an opportunity to meet employers to improve career prospects. The apprentice will gain a combination of work-based and theoretical learning which leads to a nationally recognised qualification.

The council is working closely with Arch, the leading employer led provider of digital marketing and IT apprenticeship. Events are set to take place in Oldham during the summer and will be revealed in the near future.
