Young apprentice speaks at national event

Aaron Nailor (18) from Hastings, an apprentice at Harveys Brewery in Lewes was in London this week to speak at a National Apprenticeship Week (NAW) event organised by the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA).

Held at CIMA’s head office in Pimlico, the event, “Great Apprenticeships - The CIMA Higher Apprenticeship Showcase”, was aimed at those who wanted to find out more about the CIMA Higher Apprenticeship scheme.

The keynote speaker at the event was Mike Weatherley MP for Hove, FCMA, CGMA who said “ Apprenticeships are a fundamental part of the Government’s initiative to equip young people with the requisite skills needed by employers in the modern job market, which is why I am delighted that the Government has made them more robust and relevant to the continuously changing needs of the modern workplace. The success of apprenticeships is evident from the record numbers of young people who are now taking part in apprenticeship schemes across the country.“

Aaron was amongst a number of CIMA apprentices from around the country who spoke about his experience and how it had benefited him in starting out on a career in finance. Born and brought up in Hastings, Aaron attended Filsham Valley Secondary School before going on to do A’Levels at Sussex Coast College then taking up the apprenticeship at Harveys.

Talking about his experience Aaron said “The CIMA apprenticeship at Harveys came about largely because I felt I needed a move away from full time education whilst still being able to develop my learning, as such an apprenticeship provided the best solution. I was very fortunate to be able to be taken on under this scheme. My current role involves preparing reports the development and implementation of a new accounting system which is all good training.”

CIMA Launched the Higher Apprenticeship In Management Accounting in September last year. This Apprenticeship Scheme provides a highly-credible non-university route into the world of business and finance for talented individuals. To date over 60 vacancies have already been created and filled, with students taking their first steps on this structured new entry route into a great career in business and finance.

National Apprenticeship Week (NAW) is co-ordinated by the National Apprenticeship Service and is designed to celebrate Apprenticeships and the positive impact they have on individuals, businesses and the wider economy.
