Young filmmaker turns attention to North East’s burgeoning start-up scene

A young filmmaker who has established a flourishing production company in Gateshead is turning his attention to helping other start-ups.

Joshua Kerr established Now Film Ltd last year with the help of a Transmit Start-Ups loan, and has since gone on to win work with clients include Thinking Digital conference, Go North East and Newcastle University Business School.

Now Joshua’s ambition is to target the burgeoning start-up scene in the region, with the view to securing long-term clients as the business grow.

Using his fresh experience of life in a start-up, Joshua is gearing Now Film Ltd to appeal to the budgets of entrepreneurs who want to pursue film projects.

He told Bdaily: “A lot of start-ups are put off film services because they don’t think their budgets will stretch to it.

“If we can be there to help companies out in the early stage, they will hopefully come back to us for their promotion work as they develop.”

Using their 48-hour turnaround selling point, Now Film will target start-ups through business support organisations such as Transmit Start-Up Loans, PNE and NBSL.

Joshua studied Film Production at Bournemouth University before returning to his native North East to run companies.

He explained: “A lot of my contemporaries at uni stayed in the South, or moved to London to pursue careers in TV and film production - which is a totally viable route.

“I don’t think that would have suited me, and I was sure I didn’t want to do a runner job for a lot of years and work my way up.

“My idea was to quite simply start something of my own and develop my craft that way. It’s really paid off so far as I’ve worked with a lot of people and directed some great films, and have gathered experience in running my own business.”

Now Film now employs two apprentices and Joshua says he is keen to take on more staff in coming months.
