Port of Tyne in Miami to sell North East cruise industry
Bosses from the Port of Tyne are joining the world’s cruise industry in Miami in a bid to sell the region as a cruise destination.
The Seatrade Cruise Shipping Convention is an annual event where cruise executives gather to discuss the state of the industry and plan the following year’s schedules.
Port of Tyne are hoping to sell the fact that over 623,000 cruise and ferry passengers sailed from the region last year.
Two new cruise companies are already coming to the Port of Tyne in 2014: Portuscale Cruises with the MV Azores and V-Ships with the MV Artania.
The German cruise line Peter Deilmann is returning with the MV Deutschland, along with Hapag Lloyd’s inaugural call of the Hanseatic and Swan Hellenic revisiting with exclusive cruise ship Minerva.
Steven Harrison, Port of Tyne’s chief operating officer, said: “The North East is a destination that has much to offer cruise lines with a well-established, eclectic range of world-renowned tourist attractions.
“The Port’s award-winning cruise terminal is fully equipped to handle all types of cruise calls, with smooth parking, check-in facilities, baggage handling, easy connections into the region, and customer service that is second to none.
“As many more people choose to take a cruise for their holiday we know that we can increase this business and our team will be working hard at the convention to attract more cruise lines here and into the North East region.”
