Barrier Group meets tight deadline for offshore rig safety components
Fire proofing specialists at Barrier Group have fast-tracked the manufacture of offshore safety components to meet an overseas client’s tight timescale.
Barrier Group, which is based in Wallsend on Tyneside, is a leading provider in the field of corrosion and fire protection in offshore, petrochemical and construction projects.
The contract, which was carried out by the Group’s Fire Protection division, involved the production and fire-proofing of 200 pre-fabricated box enclosures for topsides located in the Norwegian Sea.
The work, which was sub-contracted to Barrier by Beerenberg, is for the Valemon gas field. The main client was Norwegian company Statoil.
The contract, from survey to manufacture, took half the usual time - about a month - with the deadline being tight due to the project being about to become “live”.
Steve May, Managing Director of Barrier Fire Protection, said: “This exacting contract demonstrates how Barrier employees can meet exceptionally tight deadlines without compromising on quality.
“It also strengthens our export portfolio with overseas companies developing their commitment to safety to meet the latest internationally-recognised safety standards.
Barrier is the only UK manufacturer and supplier of the patented fire protection box, which has been developed by Norwegian manufacturer, Benarx, part of the Beerenberg Group. The boxes are utilised to protect flanges, valves and instruments.
Before manufacture, Barrier’s qualified surveyors carried out an in-situ inspection to gauge the exact dimensions needed for the size of the boxes needed for the Statoil topsides.
After being produced, the pre-fabricated box enclosures were fireproofed with an epoxy material called Chartek 7.
The boxes have been fitted over flanges and valves on the pipework and instrumentation on the project.
Formed in 1975, Barrier Group is a leading specialist in the field of corrosion and fire protection in offshore, petrochemical and construction projects. The company employs 250 at its base in Willington Quay, Wallsend, and on client sites across the UK and abroad.
