Government pledges funding for Leeds LEP low carbon initiative

Government has pledged its support for the continued development of a low carbon initiative in the city region by committing vital funding to the Leeds City Region Enterprise Partnership.

The LEP’s Strategic Heat Programme aims to provide low carbon energy to local homes and businesses through district heat networks.

The project aims to provide more efficient heating to buildings which will help drive down the cost of energy bills and reduce emissions.

The LEP will look to utilise the funding to progress those district heat network opportunities which are deemed to be the most commercially viable.

The first phase of the programme, which is due to complete in June, will highlight a number of communities where district heat systems could be delivered.

Implementation of district heat networks is a key delivery outcome of LEP’s drive to achieving a low carbon, resource smart economy.

Paul Hamer, Chair of the LEP’s Green Economy Panel commented: “I’m delighted with the Heat Networks Delivery Unit decision to provide grant funding to the Leeds City Region Enterprise Partnership to further develop district heat networks in the City Region.

“The development and implementation of district heat networks are a key solution in reducing fuel poverty, alongside providing sustainable infrastructure for economic growth.

The funds provide an important part of the Enterprise Partnerships strategy for levering private sector and European funds for district heat networks.“
