Ten strangest things sold by auction in the last year

Picked by Phil Bird, CEO at Perfect Channel

Selling things by auction is gaining in popularity. It makes sense to consumers and businesses in a world where everyone wants to get the best value for things being sold or bought.

The strangeness of the things in my top ten is inspired by this variety. As CEO of an auction technology business, I keep note of amusing and off the wall auction items; these are the quirkier lots to catch my eye over the last year.

1. The Pope’s motorbike – a Harley Davidson with Francesco written on the tank.

2. Bruce Lee’s Jump Suit – the trademark all in one jumpsuit, bright yellow from his final movie.

3. Brussel sprouts from a Christmas dinner – for the second year in a row, five leftover vegetables.

4. An atheist’s trip to church – atheist group leader vowed to attend local service of winning bidder.

5. The brains of mental patients stolen from a museum – repeat thief lifted exhibits and sold on eBay.

6. Letters from World War II General George S. Patton Jr – reveal softer side of man known as a tough military veteran.

7. Sarah Palin’s old car – vehicle used when she was mayor of the Alaskan city, Wasilla.

8. Damien Hirst’s skateboard - skateboard decorated by the artist.

9. Han Solo’s blaster – film prop sold by auction, to a private anonymous collector.

10. Harry Potter themed charm bracelet – inspired by the novels, designed for a charity auction.
