Benalmedena barman scoops silver in renowned cocktail contest
The competition received entries from over 60 countries and was a key event on the seven day calendar of the 62nd International Bartenders Association meeting in August. Each country brought with them two bartenders: one classic and one flairtender. Classic bartenders were asked to enter one of five categories, including Before Dinner, Sparkling Cocktail, Fancy Cocktail, Long Drink and After Dinner and winners were awarded for each.
Francisco was highly commended for his ‘Green Sensation’ cocktail, but was just pipped to the post by Japan’s Naomi Takahashi, making his aperitif cocktail creation the second best in the world currently, according to industry professionals who judged the contest.
His creative concoction was a sophisticated blend of Grey Goose vodka, cherry Marnier, martini dry and blue curacao syrup, scented with orange peel.
Francisco, who is a member of ABE Malaga – Costa del Sol (Association of Bartenders Malaga) says: “From the first moment I was appointed to represent Spain at the World Championship, I took it as a very serious responsibility and worked hard to ensure I was competing at a higher level than my competing colleagues.
“I had painstakingly memorised each step and worked hard on my timings, but when you’re actually there and the pressure is on, the clock seems to run faster. It was immensely rewarding though, when the winner’s announcements were made and I knew I was bring the silver medal home to Spain.
I consider myself very fortunate to be working in a profession that I love. It is my ambition to continue to develop my skills, in an industry that is constantly evolving, and one day bring home the winner’s trophy to The Bali. I’m incredibly grateful to the management here for giving me this opportunity.“
