York restaurant and bar signed by The Rolling Stones up for sale

A well-known York restaurant where blues band, The Rolling Stones, signed their names in lipstick on the wall of a top-floor bar is up for sale.

Plunkets, based in historic 400-year old premises in High Petergate, is being sold through the corporate finance team at North Yorkshire accountants and business advisers, JWPCreers.

The restaurant was built in 1640 and thought to have once been owned by famous York chocolatiers, the Terry family, to make and sell their confectionery.

Members of The Rolling Stones scribbled their names in lipstick on the wall of the top floor bar in line in the 1960s and their signatures have been preserved.

Plunkets, which specialises in American, South American and European food, was founded as a family enterprise in the premises, which has been a restaurant for 50 years, in 1977.

The business was acquired by the current owners, who have continued to grow the 80-covers restaurant,in 2006. There are currently 22 staff many of whom are experienced within the business.

JWPCreers corporate finance partner, Tony Farmer, says: ““The senior director wishes to pursue other opportunities and the sale of Plunkets, which offers many opportunities for growth.

“It provides an ideal chance for an established independent restaurant operator to extend their portfolio or for an independent restaurant business, or national chain, to acquire the business and move into the city which attracted 7.1 million visitors in 2012 and plans to increase the visitor spend by five per cent a year.”

Plunkets leases the three-storey premises, which comprise one floor for the restaurant, another for offices and washrooms and the top floor bar area.
