Charity World Cup tournament on target
Footballers across the region are being invited to warm up for the World Cup this summer by taking part in a 7-a-side charity football tournament.
Chester-based MBNA and local football club Crossway FC have teamed up to host the competition, which takes place on Saturday 14 June – just hours before England get their World Cup campaign started against Italy at 11:00pm.
The tournament will take on a World Cup theme with every team allocated the name of a country involved in Brazil this year and it is hoped that as much as £1,500 could be raised and shared between Macmillan Cancer Support, B.I.R.D and The Light Project in Chester.
Ugo Eboh, who works at MBNA and plays for Crossway FC, said: “We’ve run this tournament every year since 1995 to raise money for charity and this year we decided that it would be good to run it before England’s first game in the group.
“That way people can make a real day of it and bring their friends and family along as we’ll have food, a raffle, bouncy castle, beat the goalie competition, face painting and even an ice cream van to keep people entertained on the day.
“Most importantly, we’ll be finished well before England kick off, so people can go and watch the game in good spirits having played some football and helped raise money for some worthy charities.”
The venue for this year’s tournament will be the Cheshire County Sports Club in Upton and as many as 24 teams will be allowed to take part.
To secure a place, teams are required to complete a short player registration form and pay the full entry fee of £85 before 16 May. For more details email nigel.james@bankofamerica.com
