Mulberry Homes welcomes first residents at Thirsk development

It won’t be a case of out of the frying pan into the fire for a North Yorkshire couple who have become the first people to move into a new development that will eventually see over 900 new homes being built on the outskirts of a popular market town.

Former fish and chip shop owners Charles and Joan Demaine have moved 11 times in their lives and at the age of 80 and 70 respectively, they are confident this will be the last.

The couple have moved into a new three-bedroom house at the Sowerby Gateway development, near Thirsk. Their house is the first to be completed in what eventually will be a 925-home development, which will underpin the expansion of the area.

To mark the occasion, Mulberry Homes, the developer behind the scheme, recently presented them with a bouquet of flowers.

Charles and Joan said: “We have owned and run fish and chip shops in different parts of Yorkshire over the years so this has meant we have had to move many times during our working lives.

“Even after we retired we continued to move around and looking back we were searching for the perfect home.

“When we first saw the board going up to advertise this development we registered our interest and we wanted this home in particular because it is close to open countryside and we knew it would allow us to indulge our love of walking.

“It’s nice being the first to live here and despite all the building work going on its surprisingly quiet.

“Even after a few weeks we know this is definitely the last move we will make because we know we have found the perfect home.”

Melanie Powls, Mulberry Homes Sales Executive, said: “We are delighted to welcome Charles and Joan to The Oaks development and we would like to wish them all the happiness in their new home.

“Our homes are designed to appeal to people of all ages and backgrounds so we couldn’t have a more fitting couple to become our first residents.”

Mulberry Homes Yorkshire is the residential developer for the Sowerby Gateway, which will form the central core of the sustainable expansion of Sowerby and Thirsk planned to meet the needs of the community for the next generation.
