Best-selling author set to start-up Liverpool in a day

  • 5,470 new businesses registered in Liverpool in 2013
  • 72,900 self-employed in city – 7.3 per cent of working age population
  • According to Enterprise Nation, 70% all new businesses started at home

A best-selling author and small business expert is set to bring her one-woman startup workshop to the city to help would-be entrepreneurs take the first step towards their business goal.

Emma Jones, Enterprise Nation founder, will be running a day-long StartUp Saturday event at Liverpool Central Library on June 28.

According to official labour market statistics, there are already more than 72,900 self-employed people in Liverpool – that’s 7.3 per cent of the working age population. Statistics from national enterprise campaign, StartUp Britain, showed there were 5,470 new businesses registered Liverpool in 2013.

Emma said:“Record numbers of people are starting businesses – more than 5,000 in the city alone last year, and half a million country-wide.

“Often it’s taking the first step that is the biggest leap. That’s partly what StartUp Saturday is designed to help with.

“I want to see people in Liverpool who would like to take their passion, hobby, skill or who have spotted a gap in the market and want to know how to turn it into a great business in a day.“

Emma, who was awarded an MBE for services to enterprise in the Queen’s Jubilee Birthday Honours List, will be encouraging people in the city to turn a hobby or a passion into a money-spinning idea at Liverpool Central Library in William Brown Street next month/June 28.

“Entrepreneurship is exciting – and it’s catching! Once people recognise that they can do it and that it’s easier than they think, amazing things start to happen,“ Emma added.

StartUp Saturday offers Liverpool entrepreneurs and companies within their first two years of trading all they need to know about starting and growing a business; from making sales to creating a website, managing finances and taking on extra help.

Emma’s visit is supported by world-leading accountancy support network the ICAEW, .CO Internet, the company behind the fast-growing .CO domain and Virgin Startup, the not-for-profit company for entrepreneurs.
