Family businesses and advisers help move Stephen Sutton’s charity towards £4million
Family businesses and professional advisers have raised almost £500 for the Stephen Sutton’s cancer fundraising campaign at an event at Sutton Coldfield’s Newhall Hotel.
The Ask the Adviser event was organised by Families in Business Ltd (FiB), the national, independent organisation focused on providing support to family businesses through its network, membership offer and specialised consultancy services.
Director of East End Foods Jason Wouhra was guest speaker at the event and together with FiB’s CEO Dani Saveker, agreed that fundraising and donations on the day should be in memory of Midlander Stephen Sutton; he raised more than £3.2 million for the Teenage Cancer Trust before he died on the 14th May aged 19 years old, and the latest total exceeds £3.9 million.
“Thanks to the generosity of all the family business guests and advisers taking part in the event, more than £460 was raised in one morning for Stephen Sutton,” said Dani. “Jason and I agreed it was appropriate to make the donation to this charity after Stephen had passed away just a couple of days before. He was passionate about leaving a legacy – something that resonates with family businesses.”
Speaking at the event, Jason Wouhra highlighted the importance of open communication in family businesses, of knowing their values and staying relevant to the changing market.
The event also provided family businesses the rare opportunity to have confidential, one-to-one, no obligation meetings with an array of professional advisers and family business experts including Smith Cooper, Else Solicitors, Vistage International, Growth Accelerator, Lesniak Swann, and Yorkshire Bank.
Jason Wouhra has worked in the family-owned business since 1988. Founded over forty years ago by his father and four brothers, East End Foods plc is today one of the UK’s leading spice, lentil and rice specialists, with an annual turnover in excess of £180m.
The next Ask the Adviser event is in the North West, and then moves to Yorkshire and East Midlands, before returning to the West Midlands on 21st November for an event in the Black Country.
