Ex-York City football player turned entrepreneur launches £200k crowdfunding venture

Former York City defender David McGurk is turning to crowd-funding as he makes the transition into business after professional football.

David set up betsofmates.com in July 2012, and the company is regulated by the UK Gambling Commission. The site operates pooled betting on football, darts and rugby, describing itself as “The Social Betwork.”

It provides real time in-play betting, mixing betting with social media.

David’s company betsofmates.com has listed 22% of its equity on the UK crowd funding site crowdcube.com. It hopes to raise £200k from the campaign.

So far the company has raised £18k and reached 13 investors, but its early days still.

31 year old Middlesborough-born David McGurk made 395 appearances for Darlington and York City. He announced his retirement from football in April 2014, after 13 years as a professional.

David said: “’We have worked hard on minimal funding to get to where we are now. We now feel ready to go to the next level.

“Using the funding we plan to build an App which our existing customers have been crying out for. On top of that we will introduce new sports, improve the website and finally be in a position to market the brand.

“We are proud of what we achieved so far but feel there is a lot of potential to tap into a huge market with a bit of financial backing’”

Crowdcube Limited is an online crowd funding platform that is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. Crowdcube is based in Exeter University’s Innovation Centre.
