Tissue maker’s photo competition opens up the world for local women photographers

Prudhoe-based tissue manufacturer, SCA, is giving aspiring women photographers in the North East and beyond the chance to showcase their talent around the world from Sweden to South Africa and Abu Dhabi to Brazil.

SCA, producers of leading household brands including Velvet, Cushelle and Plenty, is running the competition in partnership with Getty Images as a part of its support for the Volvo Ocean Race, where it is entering an all-women team: Team SCA.

The competition is based on the theme: “Ordinary Women doing Extraordinary Things” and entrants are asked to submit a portfolio of images that celebrate awe-inspiring women from all walks of life.

Lucky winners will be transported to one of the stop-over points of the Volvo Ocean Race where the sailing teams rest before setting off again on their global racing marathon.

Images from each winning photographer will form part of a portfolio for a Team SCA exhibition in the Pavilion at each of the Volvo Ocean Race stop-overs.

These include: Alicante (Spain), Cape Town (South Africa), Abu Dhabi (UAE), Sanya (China), Auckland (New Zealand), Itajai (Brazil), Newport (USA), Lisbon (Portugal), Lorient (France) and Gothenburg (Sweden). Winners will receive accommodation and practical tuition from professional Getty Images and Team SCA photographers.

SCA’s site manager at Prudhoe Mill, Richard Sutcliffe, said: “About 80% of the retail products SCA make including Bodyform, TENA, Velvet and Plenty are purchased by women and we support women’s empowerment and their freedom to participate fully in society – socially, educationally and professionally.

“It is this belief in empowering women that has driven us to field an all-women crew for the Volvo Ocean Race and why we have decided to support this photography competition.

“It gives female photographers a fantastic opportunity to showcase their talents on an international stage and the winners will get first-hand experience learning from professional photographers to help further develop their skills.”

The first set of four winners for the photography competition will be announced on July 1st – entries for these prizes close on June 23rd. The second batch of winners (six in total) will be announced on October 7th – submissions for these close on October 1st 2014.
