Family firm targets continued expansion

A family business which manufactures, supplies and installs glass fixtures and fittings to companies globally is targeting further growth as it approaches its 40th birthday.

Peterlee Glass was founded in 1977 by the Hawes family and now employs 26 people. It also posted a record £2.1m turnover in 2013 and was shortlisted for the Manufacturing Award at the North East Business Awards earlier this year.

Now the man at the helm of the business, Managing Director Graeme Hawes, is aiming to take it to even greater heights.

Graeme said: “Since Peterlee Glass was started in 1977, things have gone from strength to strength and we’re now enjoying real success.

“Our turnover has steadily increased to a record £2.1m last year and to be shortlisted for the Manufacturing Award at the North East Business Awards was a proud moment for everyone associated with the business.

“The target for us now us to continue to grow, increase our workforce from the current 26 and go one better and win an award next year. I really believe we can achieve that.”

Peterlee Glass is based on the North West Industrial Estate and also has a trade centre on the neighbouring South West Industrial Estate, both located on Peterlee Business Park.

The company carries out shop fittings and structural glass installations and supplies glass worktops and splashbacks, mirrors and safety glass to customers including Primark, Fenwick and TK Maxx.

They were also contracted to supply glass panels for installation at the Metro Centre and Eldon Square and have worked on projects as far afield as Cardiff, Dijon, Marseille and Dusseldorf.

Graeme added: “We’ve recently invested over £500,000 in new machinery which backs up our commitment to continue to grow in Peterlee. Our reputation is spreading far and wide and we’re finding now that in addition to the numerous contracts we are awarded in the North East, we’re securing more and more work overseas which is fantastic.

“It’s exciting to think where the business will be this time next year.”
