Mid Yorkshire Chambers and Huddersfield solicitors team up to provide international apprenticeships

Mid Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce and solicitors Eaton Smith have awarded twenty University of Huddersfield students with funding to travel overseas for work experience.

With donations placed in Trust by local philanthropists John Tinker and Edward Fisher in 1911, the Tinker Fisher Fund has been making awards to local students ever since, now in its 103rd year the Trust is still at work allowing ambitious students from Kirklees to travel abroad for research, work experience or study.

The awards, which were set up with the purpose of broadening educational horizons, attracted over 60 entries, which were judged on merit by an independent awarding panel representing the Chamber, the University of Huddersfield, Kirklees College and Eaton Smith Solicitors.

This] number of applications was almost double the number of submissions made in recent years and resulted in successful students being awarded a share of £9,500.

Leah Black of the University of Huddersfield was awarded an additional £200 by the judging panel for the most outstanding application in 2014.

Executive director of the Chamber Andrew Choi commented: “It is a privilege for us to be part of this 103 year tradition which is a timely reminder, once again, of the important link between the business community of Huddersfield and the development and aspiration of young people in the district.

“We wish all the beneficiaries every success in their travels and hope they will bring back new perspectives and new skills as a result.”
