Family businesses urged to enter sector’s flagship awards

Family run and owned businesses are being urged to enter the Midlands’ flagship Awards for the sector.

The Midlands Family Business Awards are an independent, not-for-profit initiative organised by third generation family business, The Wilson Organisation.

Smith Cooper is headline sponsor of the Awards for the fourth consecutive year in 2014, and as the firm’s Partner in Nottingham, Chris Taylor, explains, entering them brings a host of benefits:

“I would urge all Midlands-based family run or owned businesses, their leaders and advisers, to enter the 2014 Awards and shine a light on their work, business and successes. They are the Midlands only Awards dedicated to recognising family-owned businesses and by entering – which is free of charge – family businesses not only have the chance to win a prestigious award, but they will also join a friendly community of like minded family business owners.”

The headline Midlands Family Business of the Year category is for established family businesses across all industry sectors that can demonstrate sustained success across a broad range of measures.

Chris was one of the judges on the independent panel for the headline category in 2013, alongside TV presenter Alex Polizzi, and Mark Samworth of Samworth Brothers; Mansfield-based manufacturer Belton Massey was awarded the title of Midlands Family Business of the Year.

“As headline sponsor, one of our favourite duties is to participate in the judging of the Award,” says Chris. “Each year we meet some truly incredible businesses and last year was no exception. What stood out with Belton Massey was the enthusiasm and passion with which they run their business. The company is a truly deserving winner.”

Belton Massey is Europe’s largest independent manufacturer of high quality, non-original catalytic converters. Established in 1966, it operates from two manufacturing bases in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire and supplies distributors and garages in more than thirty countries worldwide.

After collecting the Award at the prestigious Dinner in November, the company’s Chairman, John Massey, said: “For other people who have been very successful, to recognise the success of the business, is confidence-building.”

Family businesses can enter the Awards free of charge and submissions can be made via the website: http://www.familybusinessawards.co.uk/categories/fastest-growing-family-business-2014 until the end of June.

2014 is the fifth year for the not-for-profit, independent Awards. They are organised by third generation family business The Wilson Organisation, which provides innovative insurance and financial solutions to businesses and individuals both regionally and nationally.
