Temp-Team tackles UK engineering shortage

A North East based recruitment agency is tackling the UK engineering skills shortage by inspiring local students to consider a career in the sector.

The innovative firm, which is headquartered in Gateshead, visited Benfield High School in Newcastle to discuss the importance of plugging the skills gap.

Temp-Team’s Gateshead area manager, David Milner, delivered a rallying speech to sixth form students between the ages of 17 and 18.

David discussed the current engineering opportunities in the North-East and how the pupils can get there, through work experience, apprenticeships and a strong CV.

He said: “Myself and Temp-Team as a whole are keen to keep Britain competing on the world stage platform of engineering. We believe this can be achieved through informing and nurturing the next generation while they’re still young and open to suggestions regarding their career choices.”

Benfield High School’s assistant head teacher, Maria Irving, said: “We’re very appreciative of Temp-Team taking the time and effort to come and speak to our pupils about the engineering jobs market.”

The teenagers found the talk very inspiring and supportive. Liam bland, a student listening to David’s speech said: “It was a really helpful session, my focus at the moment is just on passing exams so to have an industry expert show us where we can go from there is really useful.”

The firm is also keen to break down the barriers which are blocking the number of women entering the profession.

David believes schools, businesses, recruiters and the community in general have a responsibility to make engineering more appealing to women.

He added: “More needs to be done to break down the stereotypical perceptions people associate with the engineering sector.

“We’re all taught about Florence Nightingale & Emily Pankhurst, but what about the incredible women who broke new ground in engineering?

“One of our core values at Temp-Team is making a difference and we believe that if we can help encourage a new generation into engineering we are achieving our goals.”

The flourishing firm is keen to tackle more local issues this year and is hoping to take on more community projects.

Temp-Team specialises in permanent and temporary recruitment for all business sectors and sizes. It’s currently celebrating 35 years in business.
