Essex cruise operators return to Tyne

Essex cruise operator, Cruise and Martime Voyages (CMV), has returned to the Tyne with the first in a series of five routes operating across this summer.

The firm kicked-off its summer itinerary with a six-night trip around the coast of Scotland and the Faroe Islands this week, and will also operate trips to St. Petersburg and Baltic capitals; Norway and the Arctic Circle - and say each cruise will bring a total of 1,400 people to the Port.

Operating the 1965-built Marco Polo ship, CMV say the North East is one of their key markets - accounting for over 10% of their passengers numbers each year.

The firm said its decision to return to Port of Tyne for this series of cruises was largely thanks to its vantage point across the Northern hemisphere and the facilities on offer at the North Shields terminal.

Chris Coates, CMV’s commercial director said: “The North East has been a really important base for us for many years. Since starting here in 2010 we’ve continually found the Port of Tyne to be an excellent base.

“Our cruises bring a significant number of tourists into the region - and its a destination in its own right that has a lot to offer - from shopping to history and walking.

“Our North East-based customers demand a high quality accommodation and unique destinations - which is why we’ve been so successful from here. For us, the region is seen as a higher revenue market.”
