Gentoo: ‘People of Berwick’ community hoardings unveiled
A fantastic community project in Berwick was unveiled this week as local community groups, schools and emergency services came together to celebrate their achievement.
Thanks to Four Housing and Gentoo Construction, the hoardings outside the Elizabethan Court site on Westfield Road in Berwick were entered into the ‘Ivor Goodsite’ Hoarding competition as part of the Considerate Constructors scheme.
Children from Berwick Middle School, St. Mary’s C of E School, Happy days Nursery, Sure Start and staff from the Coast Guard, RNLI, Police, Fire Service and Ambulance service contributed to the ‘People of Berwick’ themed boards which included designs to reflect; the important people of Berwick, historic people of Berwick and the future people of Berwick.
Managing Director of Gentoo Construction Allan Thompson said: “This has been one of our biggest community projects to date and what a fantastic afternoon it was. Using this competition allows us to engage with younger children and the wider community to educate about site safety and to encourage everyone to take an interest in what is being built in their community, leaving a positive legacy behind.”
The Elizabethan Court site will provide 16 two bedroom apartments for rent.
Dawn Keightley, Group Director of Operations at Four Housing, said: “The construction of the new homes on the former site of The Elizabethan is progressing well and it is great that younger community members have been able to have some fun with the hoardings and get involved in this fantastic project.
“Once complete, the site will provide homes specifically designed for older members of the community, with a focus on enabling people to live full and independent lives.”
The apartments will be allocated via Northumberland Homefinder. The estimated completion date of the scheme is early 2015.
