Business savvy students compete in college event

Schools from across the region have taken part in a number-crunching competition alongside experts from ICAEW (Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales) in a unique event organised by Stockton Sixth Form College.

Year 10 pupils from Bishopsgarth, Carmel College, Conyers, Egglescliffe, Grangefield, Ian Ramsey, Our Lady and St. Bede, Northfield, North Shore Academy, Red House, St. Michael’s Academy, St. Patrick’s Catholic College and Thornaby Academy took on the role of Chartered Accountants, analysing a business case study and identifying its challenges.

In the final heat, pupils worked with college students to explore solutions for the chosen business and then presented their findings to an expert panel of judges. Winning teams from Conyers, OLSB, Red House School and Thornaby Academy were all presented with plaques by the college.

Alan Holborn, Head of Business at Stockton Sixth Form College, said: “We work very closely with ICAEW and college students continue to benefit from competitions and events they have run previously.

“We wanted to bring those experiences to pupils in our partner schools and are thrilled so many joined us to take part in the competition.”

Amanda Akien, from ICAEW, said: “The business games we provide give students the opportunity to explore the role of an ICAEW Chartered Accountant in more depth. It also helps to dispel the myths associated with careers in accountancy, so students can see how varied the roles are once they have completed the ACA qualification.

“As we have worked with Stockton Sixth Form College many times, it is a pleasure to be able to support their students and students from surrounding schools in building their employability skills through this activity.”
