York building services film Shouksmith and Sons awarded £2.7 million contract

York-based building services company J. H. Shouksmith and Sons Ltd. has been awarded a £2.7 million contract by Watkin Jones Group Ltd.

They will undertake the design and installation of the mechanical and electrical package at the new Gorse Stacks Primary Health Care Centre in the heart of Chester.

Working across the building’s five floors, Shouksmiths’ project includes the installation of the full range of building engineering services comprising air conditioning and ventilation systems, security and CCTV facilities, fire alarms, telecommunications systems, heating, pipework services, plus all power and lighting.

A full building management system and two plant rooms are also being installed, one of which will house an energy efficient, combined heat and power unit. Work started on site at the end of February 2014 and is due for completion in early October 2014.

The Health Care Centre is the first phase of the development of the Gorse Stacks site, and will comprise a large reception area, a pharmacy, a café, waiting areas on each floor, consulting rooms, treatment rooms and a three tier underground car park. Further phases for the site are also planned in the future to include offices and 42 residential units.

The Gorse Stacks contract was awarded just as Shouksmiths prepared to hand over another project to Watkin Jones Special projects division, a student accommodation block at Morfa Road, Swansea.

This project, valued at £1.3 million, comprised the full mechanical and electrical design and installation works to the 382 room block and included the use of prefabricated bathroom pods and a highly efficient water booster system.

David Shouksmith, director, J H Shouksmith and Sons Ltd. said: “We have extensive experience in both student accommodation and medical centres and are looking forward to delivering another successful project for Watkin Jones in the Autumn.

“Like Shouksmiths, they are a family firm with a rich heritage in the construction industry who are committed to delivering outstanding service and value for money and we are delighted to have been appointed by them for both the Morfa Road and Gorse Stacks projects.”

Geraint Morgan, group commercial director, Watkin Jones Group Ltd., commented: “Watkin Jones Special Projects Division is delighted to have awarded two substantial orders to Shouksmiths for the Morfa Road student accommodation scheme at Swansea and the Gorse Stacks Primary Health Care Centre in Chester.

“The mechanical and electrical package is a key element of any building project and we have found the service received from Shouksmiths in terms of design input and the installation first class.

“We have found them to be proactive and a company that keeps abreast of modern methods of construction and legislation.”
