TIS ‘on fire’ in latest project at RAF Coningsby

Nottinghamshire based systems integrators TIS Ltd are celebrating the successful completion of a complex video fire detection (VFD) system designed to protect the priceless collection of military aircraft located at RAF Coningsby near Lincoln.

Nottingham based TIS Ltd were awarded the contract by the Royal Air Force Project Team following an intense competitive tender process and follow up detailed technical presentation, taking into account its proven track record of working with the Royal Navy for more than 50 years.

The project to protect The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF) Hangar at RAF Coningsby, which is home to a number of historic aircrafts including the Spitfire and Lancaster, was based on a partnership with one of the world’s leading VFD development companies, FIKE Safety Technology Ltd.

The FIKE Signifire equipment installed, processes complex video algorithms to enable early warning of a fire, enabling the onsite RAF fire crews to be alerted much earlier than would be the case with conventional fire detection systems, and a total of 20 cameras were installed, along with enhanced LED lighting packs that produce the required scene illumination throughout the aircraft hangar.

The project had many complexities that had to be overcome from the onset, and the RAF Project Team relied totally on the ability of TIS to undertake the role of Principal Contractor and safely manage the total work package.

The whole project was managed by TIS Head of Contracts, Mark Wilson. Mark has been responsible for delivering many system installation’s throughout the UK, he said: “This has been a rewarding project delivery in many ways, and we very much appreciate the support we have received from the RAF Project Team throughout.”

Following completion of the BBMF project, TIS have been successful in being awarded further VFD Contracts at RAF Coningsby.
