Local hospital part of newly awarded Hospital Group

Spire Washington Hospital is celebrating after its parent group scooped Private Hospital Group of the Year at the prestigious 2014 HealthInvestor Awards.

Spire beat off stiff competition from rival groups in the clinical services category, which was judged by a panel of 21 independent experts for the healthcare trade publication.

In addition to Spire Washington, the group operates 37 hospitals across the UK and ongoing investment in the group, including new equipment and a new cancer centre in Bristol, helped Spire to win the award.

At Spire Washington Hospital, recent investment has included upgrades to two operating theatres, the redevelopment of patient bedrooms and an extension that now houses purpose built employee offices. A new CT scanner is due to be opened in July this year.

The group’s high patient and consultant satisfaction ratings, along with exemplary clinical outcomes also proved key. During 2013, no cases of MRSA bacteraemia were reported in any Spire hospitals. In addition, according to the Department for Health, four Spire Hospitals are currently ranked in the top 10 for knee replacements and three are in among the top 25 providers of hip replacements. Spire Washington Hospital is included in both of these lists.

The judges said: “In a very tight category Spire just get the award due to their recent numerous and quantifiable measures underpinning their efforts to ensure service excellence.”

Shelagh Alderson, director of Spire Washington Hospital, said: “Every single member of staff here commits to delivering the highest level of care and an enjoyable patient experience and these results are testament to the hard work of our team, and the teams in all the Spire hospitals across the UK.”

Spire group CEO, Rob Roger, paid tribute to the staff whose efforts had played a major role in winning the award.

He said: “Whilst I was delighted to accept the award I would like to thank you for helping bring home this award. It’s thanks to the hard work and dedication from everyone at Spire that led to us coming out on top.”

The awards ceremony at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel was attended by 1,300 guests from the independent heath sector. Times columnist Matthew Parris presented the awards, which were judged by a panel of independent healthcare specialists.
