Royal Mail figures seal future for Washington firm
According to recent figures released by Royal Mail, more than a quarter of all UK mail is contained in an envelope or packaging produced by a North East manufacturer.
Washington-based company Encore Envelopes Ltd is the largest privately owned printed envelope manufacturer in the UK.
Its sister company Encore Packaging Solutions produces nearly 4bn of the 15bn envelopes and packages delivered by Royal Mail per year at its Washington headquarters.
The figures are released just six months after Encore’s acquisition of the UK division of Spanish competitor, Tompla Envelopes, which saw all production move from Europe to Washington.
The acquisition allowed the company to invest in specialist machinery as well as securing the future of its 230 strong workforce.
Russell Croisdale, Encore’s managing director, said: “Even in the digital age, packaging and envelopes are vital for the day-to-day running of every business in the UK.
“The strength of our business is built on the knowledge and expertise of our workforce and our expansion has enabled us to secure jobs in the North East. Many of our team have been with Encore for over 20 years, and we’re working hard and investing in our business to ensure we can celebrate with them again in a further 20 years.”
