Residents encouraged to get on their bikes
Just a week before the Tour de France passes close by, free bikes are being given to people who buy a home on a new housing development in Thirsk.
Developer Mulberry Homes Yorkshire is providing the mountain bikes as part of the overall sustainability objectives of the new development. It also coincides with the start of the Grand Depart in North Yorkshire on 5th and 6th July, which passes close to Thirsk.
Among the first to ‘get on their bike’ are Alan and Eileen Cure, who recently bought a four-bedroom home on the Sowerby Gateway scheme. They moved to the area from Carlisle to be close to their daughter who lives between Thirsk and Northallerton.
Mr and Mrs Cure said: “Since moving in to the house we have already done lots of walking and exploring and having the bike will enable us to go even further without having to take the car.
“It wasn’t until we bought the house that we discovered we would be given a free bike and we think it’s a great idea. We are surrounded by countryside here so anything that can help to protect the environment is a good thing.”
As well as providing one bike to every household on the scheme, Mulberry Homes is also providing a helmet and a high visibility jacket.
Melanie Powls, Mulberry Homes Sales Executive, said: “The homes we are building are among the most energy efficient in the UK but we also want to reduce carbon emissions further by encouraging residents to literally get on their bikes and, where possible, leave their cars at home.
“Certainly, with such good access into the centre of Thirsk, we hope people will use their bikes to get into town and fully embrace green living.”
“And with the Tour de France passing so close to the Sowerby and Thirsk area, this may encourage even more people to take up cycling.”
Mulberry Homes Yorkshire is the residential developer for the Sowerby Gateway, which will form the central core of the sustainable expansion of Sowerby and Thirsk planned to meet the needs of the community for the next generation.
