Businesses invited to enter County Durham Environment Awards

Champions of the environment are being urged to sign up for a major programme of awards taking place this year in County Durham.

Businesses throughout the county are invited to apply for this year’s County Durham Environment Awards, which are now in their 25th year.

Individuals, community organisations and schools can also apply for the awards, which celebrate environmental projects and community activities that improve and enhance the local area.

The awards are managed by Durham County Council on behalf of the County Durham Environment Partnership and are supported through generous sponsorship from local and national partners

This year sees the creation of a new category – ‘Places and spaces’ – designed to reward schemes which create cleaner and greener surroundings as well as responding to the needs of local communities.

Terry Collins, Chairman of the County Durham Environmental Partnership, said: “Environmental work is so important to the future of County Durham. The Environment Awards are an opportunity for people to showcase their work to improve and enhance the environment.

“The range of categories is specifically designed to attract a diverse selection of entrants, from individuals, volunteers and community groups, to schools, businesses and specialists.

“We want people to tell us about their work through the awards so we can give them the recognition they deserve.”

Entries opened in June and can be made until Friday, July 25 in a range of categories including built environment, climate change, community partnership, craftsmanship, greener business, natural environment, places and spaces, schools and colleges, volunteer group of the year, volunteer of the year (under 18 & over 18) and waste management.
