Carpenter Rees on Target to Raise £11,000 for Alzheimer’s Society

Financial services firm Carpenter Rees is on target to raise £11,000 for the Alzheimer’s Society, following a gruelling 520-mile charity bike ride.

Dubbing the ride ‘The Two Towers Challenge’, the team set off from Blackpool Tower on 7 June, cycling to the Eiffel Tower in Paris in only six days, via stops in Congleton, Ludlow, Lechlade on Thames, Caen and Evereux.

The team cycled a total of more than 16,000 feet of uphill and burned over 4,000 calories each per day to raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Society – the UK’s leading support and research charity for people with dementia, as well as their families and those who care for them. Over 800,000 people in the UK currently live with some form of dementia, with more than half living with Alzheimer’s disease. This figure is set to rise to over a million in the next 10 years and currently costs the UK around £23 billion each year.

Mike Carpenter, director of Carpenter Rees, said: “The ride was challenging, but an absolutely amazing experience for all involved – there are certainly a few well-earned aches and pains across the team at the moment. We’re well on our way to raising our target of £11,000, and we’re hoping that people will continue to donate after seeing the efforts put in by the whole team.”

He added: “We’d like to thank everyone for their support over the past few months and the kind donations we have already received; we wouldn’t have been able to complete this challenge without them.”

The team consisted of company director Mike Carpenter, and staff member Graham Tracey, as well as friends and family including Ian Short, Guy Short, Vicki Lamb, Guy Carpenter, Brian Coombs, Andy Jeffries and Sarah Mawbey – supported by Annette Hulse and Trevor Burchik.

A number of North West based businesses, including Pedal Precision, Fulcrum Sports Therapy and Pro-Balance Training Gym, pledged their support for Carpenter Rees by making sure the team were fully equipped and prepared for the challenge.

Helen Cannell, the Alzheimer’s Society’s Community Fundraiser for Greater Manchester and Lancashire, said: “We’re absolutely delighted that the Carpenter Rees team chose to support us by taking on this touch challenge. Their determination and perseverance has been clear to see, and we can’t thank the team enough for their efforts and the donations they’ve already received.”

Dementia is one of the biggest health concerns for people over 55, ahead of cardiovascular disease and stroke. One in three people over 65 go on to develop dementia.
